1962 Epiphone Crestwood Custom White

There’s a lot to be said for the oft over-looked Epiphones of the late 50s and early 60s. They share many characteristics with their Gibson cousins, and sometimes totally outshine and totally out-cool them! Case in point: the Crestwood Custom! Thin asymmetrical body, super rounded edges, a tricked-out rosewood emblazoned vibrato, Mini Humbuckers, oval fingerboard inlays, and the two-toned pickguard all add up to one might purdy package. Nice and roomy 1-11/16” wide necks too. xoxoxo

We’re still trying to get over Prince breaking one of these on a TV appearance last year. Condolences to “Captain” Kirk Douglas of the Roots, hope you got that baby up and running again.

This guitar is available for purchase from Rock N Roll Vintage in Chicago. www.rocknrollvintage.com

This 1942 Martin 0-18 is one of our favorite single-0 Martins we have in the shop. It has an old but stable repair at the sound hole and new Grover tuners (the originals are in the case). One we got it, Lowe Vintage repaired some fingerboard wear and gave it a full refret. Big sound in a small package!

Holy eff, this c.’73 Rickenbacker 4001 is the lightest, most strident-sounding Ric Bass I’ve ever played. Worn-in, perfectly set up and with a potent sound, I can’t imagine this one’s going to last long. For sale soon! OMG indeed… #guitar #bass #vintage #rickenbacker #4001 #seattle #vintageguitar (at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar)

Here are some shots of the great guitar goodness at a little shop called The Twelfth Fret in Toronto Canada.  With a few shots of The Distillery District - a 19th C  booze-making factory that was at one time the largest distiller in North America, and has now been turned into restaurants, shops and galleries :

  1. I’m pretty sure Cromwell was one of the brands that Gibson made for other companies in the 30s.  Dig the stripe down the middle of the fretboard.
  2. I’m pretty sure* those pipes carried the booze between buildings…
  3. I had a modern Thinline Telecaster for a while but sold it.  I am itching to get another…like this American Deluxe.
  4. I want candy (apple).
  5. The sign says “Ferment-something”. Even 30 or 40 years after it shut down, the stench of whiskey is still in every building!!*
  6. One day I’ll get a white-blonde Tele.  And a butterscotch one too!
  7. I am so glad Fender decided to copy the greenish discolouring that was common on early Strats.  We call it “mint”, and it looks awesome on candy apple, Olympic white and…as seen here…sunburst.
  8. This was the actual truck that Elliot Ness and his Treasury officers (plus Sean Connery) intercepted full of whiskey while smuggling illegal hooch into the US during prohibition in the 20s and 30s***
  9. Ah?  See?  MINT!  Looks great!

* No I’m not.

** No, it isn’t.

*** Nope.  Not at all true.  Made it up. 100% fabrication.
